What Is Insights Discovery, and Why Does It Matter for Team Performance?
Every team is made up of different personalities, communication styles and ways of working.
Some people like to make decisions quickly. Others prefer to take their time and think things through. Some bring energy and ideas to a conversation, while others are more focused on detail, relationships or keeping things on track.
Those differences can be a real strength. But when we don’t understand them, they can also lead to frustration and misunderstandings.
That’s where Insights Discovery can help.
What Is Insights Discovery?
Insights Discovery is a personal development tool based on the psychology of Carl Jung.
It uses a simple four-colour energy model to help people understand how they tend to communicate, make decisions and work with others.
The four colour energies are:
- Fiery Red – direct, decisive and focused on results
- Sunshine Yellow – enthusiastic, sociable and full of ideas
- Earth Green – supportive, patient and people-focused
- Cool Blue – thoughtful, analytical and detail-oriented

We all have a mix of all four. The point isn’t to put people into boxes, but to help them understand their own preferences and recognise that other people may approach things differently.
Why Does That Matter for Teams?
A lot of workplace tension comes down to differences in style.
One person thinks they’re being efficient. Someone else thinks they’re being abrupt.
One colleague wants to make a quick decision. Another wants more time and information before moving forward.
Insights Discovery gives teams a shared language for talking about those differences without making them personal.
It helps people ask: How might my style come across to someone else? And what could I do differently to make this conversation easier?
That small shift can make a big difference.
Better Communication, Stronger Relationships
Once people understand each other’s preferences, they can start adapting the way they communicate.
A colleague with strong Cool Blue energy may appreciate more detail before making a decision. Someone with Fiery Red energy may prefer you to get to the point quickly. Earth Green energy may value time to consider the impact on people, while Sunshine Yellow energy may respond well to open discussion and new ideas.
These aren’t rigid rules. They’re simply useful clues that can help people communicate with more awareness.
Over time, that can mean fewer misunderstandings, better conversations and stronger working relationships.
Helping Teams Work Better Together
Insights Discovery can also help teams recognise the different strengths people bring.
High-performing teams don’t need everyone to think in the same way. In fact, having a mix of perspectives is often what makes a team stronger.
The key is understanding those differences and knowing how to make the most of them.
That becomes especially useful during periods of change, when people may respond in very different ways. Some want to move quickly, while others need more context, reassurance or time to process what’s happening.
Understanding those preferences can help leaders communicate more effectively and support people in a way that feels more personal.
Turning Insight Into Action
The real value of Insights Discovery comes from what happens after the profile.
Through facilitated workshops and team conversations, people can explore how they work together, where tensions might arise and what they could do differently.
That might mean changing how meetings are run, how feedback is given or how decisions are made.
The goal isn’t to change people’s personalities. It’s to help people understand each other better.
And when that happens, teams are often better placed to build trust, communicate openly and work together more effectively.
Discover What Insights Could Do for Your Team
At Perform, we use Insights Discovery to help individuals and teams better understand themselves and each other.
Through personalised profiles, facilitated discussion and practical activities, we help teams turn that understanding into everyday changes that support stronger collaboration and performance.
How it works
Our Insights Discovery workshops typically run as a full-day, face-to-face session for intact teams, with half-day and virtual formats also available. Group sizes stay practical so every voice is heard, and every session is led live by an accredited practitioner.
Each participant completes an online evaluator beforehand. On the day, Roger Ayres, our Head of Perform and Licensed Practitioner, talks through the results individually and as a team, including the team’s combined “colour mix,” usually the biggest lightbulb moment of the day.
From there, the workshop turns practical: how the team communicates, where friction shows up and why, how decisions really get made, and what would help this specific group work better together. Expect honest conversation and exercises that build toward commitments the team can act on straight away, not just a quiz and a certificate.
Insights Discovery also works well as a foundation for further development. We often combine it with our Leadership Development, Team Effectiveness and Communication Skills courses to build on it over time.
